We all want to feel safe, but most of us don't want to live or work or go to events in something that looks like a bunker. The question is how do we make protective measures feel like aesthetic architectural elements?
According to an article on building security in the Wall Street Journal, buildings are being designed today to incorporate wider entrances, lobbies, and halls to accommodate security checkpoints and metal detectors, as well as other security components such as
reinforced concrete around a building's core. But what about buildings that are already up? The creative solution lies in what building designers call "transparent security" — barriers that are unobtrusive and visually pleasing.
For example, The Coliseum in Nashville, TN, used large outside planters decorated with the logo of the Tennessee Titans to surround its entrance. Citigroup Center in midtown Manhattan installed 3-foot-tall concrete bollards decorated with stainless steel, some of which will display art. Precast planters and posts effectively prevent a car or truck carrying explosives from smashing through plate glass doors and windows.
Where do we come into the security picture? We installed concrete-filled outdoor planters in front of residential picture windows for customers wanting an extra-secure home. We installed
security planters and (concrete security bollards) barrier posts outside office buildings. There are attractive and practical ways to make your building safer. Let us help you design a concrete way to protect your property and people.
